System connections

Connecting the Onkyo Separate Collection Series

(Refer to the illustration on the following page.)

If a component, such as a cassette tape deck or MD recorder, from

the Onkyo Separate Collection Series is connected to this unit, the

following functions are possible.

■ Auto Power On

The amplifier’s power automatically turns on when a compo-

nent connected to the amplifier is powered on or operated.

You can continue operating other components, even after turn-

ing off this unit when it is not being used.

■ Direct Change

The amplifier’s INPUT SELECTOR automatically switches to

CD, MD or TAPE when these components are played, or to

TUNER when the tuner’s PRESET UP/DOWN button or BAND

button are pressed.

■ Timer function

You can use the Timer Play (weekday, weekend), the Timer

Record and the Sleep Timer.

■ Remote control operation

Each component can be operated using the remote control

enclosed with this unit.

■ CD Dubbing (CD-to-tape, CD-to-MD dubbing)/MD Synchro

recording

These functions can be used if a cassette deck and an MD

recorder are connected to this unit. Refer to the operating

instructions of each function for more details.

■ CD Dubbing with track specified (CD-to-MD)

You can record only one track at a time being played from CD

to MD.

General connections

• Do not plug in the power cord until all

connections have been made.

• On each pair of jacks, the jack (marked R)

corresponds to the right channel, and the

jack (marked L) to the left channel.

• Please refer to the instruction manual of

each component when making any con-

nections.

LINE IN jack

This jack can be used to connect a BS tuner, CS-PCM tuner, DAT

deck or any other audio or video components with an analog audio

output. Connect the output of the other component to this jack.

However, a turntable should not be connected to these jacks.

Playing a component connected to the LINE IN jack

1. Press the CD/LINE button and “LINE” appears on the display.

2. Begin playing the connected component.

Changing the input name

The name of the input that appears in the display (“LINE” in step 1

above) can be changed according to the connected component.

1. Press the CD/LINE button and “LINE” appears on the display.

2. Hold down the MEMORY button and continue pressing the

DISPLAY button until the desired name appears on the display.

With each press of the button, the name changes one at a time in

the following sequence:

→ LINE → BS → CS-PCM

DIGITAL OUTPUT jack

When an MD recorder or DAT deck is connected, a digital sound can

be recorded.

For more details, refer to the instruction manual of the other

components.

Separately sold optical fiber cables are used to connect these

components.

Note:

• A terminal protection cap is attached to the digital input termi-

nal. Remove this cap when connecting the CR-185X to other

digital equipment. When you are not using the optical digital

input terminal, replace the cap.

• Bending optical cables or coiling them too tightly can distort the

optical fibers inside and degrade performance. Never wrap

optical cables into a coil with a radius tighter than about one inch

(4cm).
