maximum performance and enjo yment out of your Sigma lens, pleas e read
this instruction booklet thoroughl y before you start to use the lens.
DESCRIPTION OF THE P ARTS (fig.1)
NIKON AF TYPE CAMERAS
This lens functions in the same way as a G T ype auto-f ocus Nikon lens
(without an aperture ring). Functions may be restr icted depending on the
lens/camera combination. For mor e details, please refer to the camera’s
instruction manual.
PENT AX AF TYPE CAMERAS
This Lens functions same as a FAJ T ype (t ype without Aperture) auto-focus
Pentax lens. Depending on the combination with camera some restrictions
with its functions may result. For more details, please refer to instruction
manual of the camera in use etc.
A TT ACHI NG T O CA MERA BODY
When this len s is attached to the camer a body it will aut omatically functio n in the
same way as the ca mera manufacturer ’s lens. Please refer to the in struction
booklet for your came ra body .
◆ On the lens mount s urface, there are a number of couplers and electrical
contacts. Please keep them clean to ensure proper con nection.

While changin g the lens, be sure to place it front end down to avoid damagi ng
the rear mount.
SETTING THE EXPOSURE MODE
The Sigma lens functions a utomatically once attached to the camera. Please
refer to the camera instruction boo k.
FOCUSING A ND ZOOMING
This lens features Sigma’s built-in Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). The HSM
enables quick and quiet autofocusing.

SIGMA A F and CANON AF
》
For autofocus operation, s et the focus mode s witch on the lens to the “AF”
position (fig.2). If you wish to focus manually , set t he focus mode switch on t he
lens to the “M ” position. Y ou can adjust th e focus by turning the focus ring.

NIKON AF , P ENT AX AF , and SONY
》
For autofocus operation, set the ca mera to AF mode and set the focus mode
switch on the lens to the “AF ” position (fig.2). If you wish to foc us manually , set
the focus mode switc h on the lens to the “M ” position. Y ou can adjust the focus
by turning the focus ring.
◆ Please refer to camera’s instruction manual for d etails on changing the
camera’s focusing mode.
◆ For Nikon, Pentax and Sony mounts, it is only possible to use AF with
camera bodies which support motors driven b y ultrasonic waves such as
HSM. AF will not function if the camera body does not support this type of
motor .
◆ This lens also permits manual focusing even in the autofocus mode. With
the camera set to the One-Shot A F (AF-S) mode, it is possible to man ually
override the autofocus while th e shutter release button is press ed halfway .
◆ When operating this lens in manual focus mo de, it is recommended th at
correct focus be confirmed visually in the viewfinder ra ther than relying on
the distance scale. This is due t o possible focus shift resulting fro m
extreme changes in temperature which cause various components in the
lens to expand and contract. S p ecial allowance is made for this at the
infinity setting.

Rotate the Rubber grip on the zoom ring t o the desired position.
ZOOM LOCK SWITCH
This lens is also equipped wit h Zoom Lock Switch to eliminate the zoo m creep
when the lens is tilted down. Pleas e set zooming ring to 150 mm and set the
zoom lock switch to the “LOCK ” positi on, (f ig.3), howeve r, pl ease s lide the
lens to the “UNLOCK ” position from “LOCK ” position, before taking the
picture.
ABOUT OS (OPTICAL ST ABILIZER) FEA TURES
(except Pentax A F and SONY mount)
This OS
(Optical Stabilizer)
lens effectively com pensates for image blurring
caused by camera shake.
With this lens, you can take pictures at shutter spe eds approx 4 steps slower
than you could without using the OS function of this lens and can get sharp
results.
Set the OS( Optical Stabilizer) switch to Mode 1 (fig. 4). Press th e shutter
button halfway down, confirm the image in the vie wfinder is stable then take
the picture.
(It takes appr oximately 1 sec ond to produ ce a stable image, aft er
pressing the s hutter butt on halfway). M ode

shake, and o vercomes bl urring. It i s effective on subje cts moving horizo ntal to
the camera.
◆ The blurring compensation functi on of Optical Stabilizer is effective for
hand-held shooting. In the following con ditions, Optical St abi lizer may not
function properly .
▪ Shots from the a moving vehicle ▪ If there is a considerable camera
motion or shake.
◆ Please do not use Optical Stabilizer in the following situations.
▪ When the lens is mounted on a tripod. ▪ Bulb (long time exposure).
◆ Optical St abilizer function is powered fr om the camera. If the OS lens is
attached to your camera and activated, shooting ca pacity of your camera
will be lower than with con ventional lenses used with the same camera. If
you are not using Optical Stabilizer , pleas e turn OFF the OS switch, in order
to prevent consumption of a batter y .
◆ Be sure to turn of OS switch to OFF position, bef ore attaching or detaching
the lens to the camera.
◆ The Optical St abilizer continues to o perate after you release your finge r
from the shutter button, as long as the e xposure meter displ ays the
exposure value. Never remo ve the lens or remo ve the camera’s battery
while the image stabilizer is operating, you could damage the lens.
◆
Although the viewfi nder image may appear t o shake immediatel y after
shooting and at the start of the flash cha rge cycle of the built- in flash of the
camera etc., it will n ot cause any e ffect on pictures.
◆ If the camera power is t urned off or lens is detached whil e the Optical
S tabilizer fu nction is in operation, the len s may emit a chattering nois e, but
this is not a malfunction.
◆ Optical St abilizer fea ture can work with the Nikon AF cameras sho wn in the
following table. When using this lens with other camera model s not listed in
the following table, please set the OS Switch to OFF position to cancel the
Optical St abilizer fu nction.

TRIPOD SOCKET A ND COLLAR
This lens is equi pped with a tripod socket. When you loosen the loc king knob on
the collar, the lens and camera can rotate freely to easily p osition the camera
horizontally or vertically (fig .5).
HOW TO REMOVE THE TRIPOD COLLAR
1. It is possible to remo ve the lens’ tripod socket, for more convenien t
hand-held photography , if desired. T o d o so, first loosen the tripod c ollar
locking knob, and, align the inde x mark of the collar , with the ▼REMOVE
position (fig.6).
2. Then, pull the tripod collar straight back, as shown in Fig.7, removing th e
collar .

When you wish to re -attach the tripod collar to the lens, pleas e reverse the
procedure above.
◆ Please, do not set the tripod collar to the ▼REMOVE position, except when
you are removing, or a ttaching, the tripod collar, as the lens may
inadvertently detach from the coll ar and fall. Also, please remember to
tighten the locking knob to pr event the lens from rotating uninte ntionally .
◆
When the lens is mounted o n the camera, the tripod collar cann ot be removed
from the lens.
SHOULDER STR AP
Please attach the shoulder strap to the sli ng as described in figure 8.
FLA SH PHOT OGRA PHY
The camera’s built-in flash will cause barrel shado w if used with this lens. For
best results, please only use an external fl ash unit.
ABOUT TELE CONVERTERS
The lens can be used with Sigma’s 1.4x EX or 2.0x EX Apo T ele Converters
(optional), becoming a 210-700 mm F7-9 telephoto zoom lens or a
300-1000mm F10-13 telephoto zoom lens respectively ( both can be used in
manual focus only).
◆ Do not use other manufactur ers’ teleconverter’s, only those list ed above are
compatible.
◆ The Pentax mount T ele Converter is not c ompatible with this particular lens.
◆ We recommend the DG APO T ele-Converters when using with DSLR
cameras.
LENS HOOD
A bayonet t ype detachable `hood is provided with the lens. T his lens hood
helps to prevent flare and ghosted images caused b y extraneous light.
Attach the hood and turn clockwise until it stop s rotating. (fig.9)
