Once

you

have

got

a steady

threshold,

quickly lowcr

listen

to any change

that

may occur

in the

thresh-

old. You will

hear

one

the

three

sounds:

OPERATING

TECHNIQUES

Just

any skill,

ground

balancing

must be

practiced

constantly.

The

casiest

place

to do

it is in

your

backyard or

anyplace close

that has at

least a

l0 foot

foot

area.

First,

check

for

any

metal targets and

remove them.

When

the

area

clean,

take

your

Tiger

Shark

and

ground

balance

it. When

you

are done,

turn the

GROI-IND

ADruST

knob either

positive

negative

and

ground

balance again. Keep up

this

practice until

you

feel

comfortable

with

ground

balancing.

Take

some

time to

keep

your ground

balancing

skills

sharp and

you

will see better

results in the f,reld.

Pinpointing

The

sweep speed

of the detector

is low enough

to allow

pinpointing

in the

Motion Discriminate Mode but will

require a little

practice.

Move the coil slowly

from side to side and

then from

front to back over

the

target.

Raising the coil slightly

and slorving

the sweep speed

will

naffow

down

the detection area

enough that it's easy

to tell whe¡e

the coil center

at the instant of sound.

Another easy

method is to sweep

the coil from side

to side across

the tar-

get in

very short sweeps

you

slowly

move

forward and backward

across

the target.

Slow

down

the

sweep

rate and shorten

the

sweeps

until

you

just

barely

get

response at

one spot.

The target

will

be directly below

the coil

center at

this response

time.

The easiest way

pinpoint

for most

people

will be

switch

the ALL

MET

Mode, since

no-motion is required.

pinpoint

target that doesn't

sat-

urate the audio,

just

move the coil forward

and back

and

side

to side until

you

get

the

strongest

sound.

The target will be directly

below

the

coil

centcr.

simply

hold the coil over

the

target

momentarily

detune

the

detector.

This will

narrow its field of

response

allow

you

to once

again seek

the area

ofsfongest

response.

Planting a Test

Garden

To better learn how

your

detector

performs in

the freld, it is helpful

to bury

some coins

and hash

metal

junk

items in an

afea that

you know is clear of other

metal

objects, and

then try the Tiger Shark

in the all metal

& discrimrnate

modes.

Check the area

in the all

metal mode to

swe

it's

clear

of trash.

Then bury the

targets

least I foot apart

and from 2

to 4 inches deep

start.

Make a

map of

the arca to

sure

you

know what each

target

and

how

deep

it is. Practice on

these targets to familiarize

yourself

with

your

detector's

target response.

This will

also help

you leam the

proper

sweep speed

for

best

operatìon.

This

type

ofprac-

tice area is often called

"test

garden" or "test bed"

and is one of

the best tools

to help

you

develop

your

metal detecting skills.

you

have made

an adjustment,

lift the

coil up,

let the threshold

retune and

push

the coil

down

again

while

listening for any

sound

change as

the coil

drops.

Ifthere is

a threshold

change,

the

above directions

and

repeat until

you

have

very

little or

no threshold changes

the way

down.

Avery

slight

positive response

is better

than any

kind ofnegative

response.

If there

are threshold

changes

on the upstroke,

not

pay

attention to

them. As

you

raise

the coil,

the detector

goes

from a

ground matrix

(soil) to

ground

matrix

(air) and

that difference

will

most

likely cause some

change

in the thleshold

tone.

Only

changes

on the

down stroke

are

to be

adjusted

for.

Now that

your

detector

ground

balanced,

you

are

ready to

hunt. You

can stay

either

the ALL

MET

Modes or switch

into

the MOTION

DISC.

Whichever

mode

you

choose

hunt in,

it is always

necessary

ground

balance

ALL MET

Mode

frrst.

Once

you

have

got

steady

threshold,

quickly

lower the coil

straight

down

to approximatelY

inch off the

ground.
