restraint systems that are appr opriat e for their age and s ize. SRS
(Supplement al Rest raint Sy stem) airbags are, as their names im-
ply, desi gned to wor k wit h, and be suppl emental to, seat belts and
are not substi tutes for them. SRS air bags c an be v ery effect ive i n
reduci ng t he r isk of head and chest injuri es by preventing contact
of the head and ches t with int erior por tions of the v ehicle.
In order to be effec tive, the SRS air bags mus t deploy with tre-
mendous speed. The rapi d deployment of t he SRS airbags makes
the SRS air bags themselves potent ial sources of death or s erious
injur y if an oc cupant i s t oo c lose to an airbag, or if an obj ect or
some part of his or her body has been placed between the
occupant and the ai rbag at the ti me of deployment . This i s jus t
one example of how the i nstr uctions in Secti on 1−3ofthisOwn-
er ’s Manual wi ll hel p ensur e proper use of the occupant res trai nt
systems, and increase the safety they can provide to you and
your fami ly in the event of an acc ident.
Toyota recommends you to read the provi sions in Sec tion 1−3
caref ully and ref er to them as needed during your ti me of owner-
ship of thi s vehic le.
