If the clamps ar e INCORRECTL Y connected with regard t o polarit y , the L CD screen will display the follo wing (the warning
icon in the triangle and the arro ws pointing to the “+” and “–” will flash) and a warning will sound until the clamps ar e
disconnected:
Unplug the charger; then r emove the clamps. Reconnect the clamps properly .
3. When the unit is properly c onnec ted, pr ess the battery charge button on the contr ol panel on the front of the unit. The L CD
screen will display the f ollowing:
The digital display sho ws the output current that is charging the ba tter y . The bars on the battery icon will change from empty
to solid (bottom to t op) repeatedly and the arr ow logos pointing to the “+” and “–” flash.
Not es: The “ ” icon will appear at the top if the surrounding ambient temperature is higher than approximat e 40°C. The “ ”
icon will appear at the top if the surrounding ambient temperature is lower than 0°C. T his is not a fault code, but indicates that
the unit’ s temperature compensa tion feature is opera ting.
IMPORT ANT: If the battery is overheat ed, the L CD screen will display the following flashing ic ons:
Disconnect the charger and allow the charger t o cool for several minutes . Make sure ther e is adequate ventila tion around the
unit before a ttempting to charge again.
• Alwa ys turn the battery charger off by unplugging it when not in use.
• DO NO T OPEN THE BA TTERY CHARGER — there ar e no user-ser viceable parts inside. Opening the batter y charger will v oid
manufacturer’ s warr anty.
• Operate battery charger only as described in this Instruction Manual.
• Check battery charger and components periodically for wear and tear . Return to manufac turer for replacemen t of worn or
defective parts immediately .
PREP ARING TO CHARGE
1. Be sure area ar ound battery is well ventilat ed while batter y is being charged .
2. Remo ve battery completely from boat/airplane or any confined area before charging .
3. If it is necessary to remove ba tter y from v ehicle to charge, or to clean t erminals, always r emove grounded t erminal from
battery first. Make sur e all accessories in the vehicle ar e off, so as not to cause an ar c.
4. Clean battery terminals, taking car e to avoid getting corr osive material in ey es.
5. A dd distilled water in each cell until battery acid reaches level specified by batter y manufacturer . This helps purge exc essive
gas from cells . Do not over fill. F or a battery without cell caps (maintenance free), car efully follow manufacturer's charging
instructions.
6. Study all battery manufacturer’ s specific precautions , such as removing or not removing c ell caps while charging, and
recommended r ates of charge.
7. Determine voltage of batt er y to be charged by r eferring to the vehicle manual . T he unit is for charging a 12 volt batt er y only .
Charger Loc ation
• Loca te charger as far awa y from batter y as cables permit.
• Never place charger directly above battery being charged; gases from battery will corrode and damage charger .
• Never allow batt er y acid to drip on charger when reading gravity or filling batter y .
• Never operate charger in a closed-in area or restrict ventila tion in any way .
• Marine batteries must be removed and charged on shore.
• Do not set a battery on top of charger .
Connection Prec autions
• C onnec t and disconnec t output clamps or vehicle accessory plug only after removing AC cord from elec tric outlet.
• Never allow clamps to touch each other .
• Attach clamps to batter y and chassis as indicated in “Batter y Installed in V ehicle” steps 5 and 6, or in “Batt er y Outside of V ehicle”
steps 2 to 5.
F ollow these steps when the battery is installed in a vehicle
WARNING: A spark near the ba tter y may cause an explosion. T o reduce risk of a spark near the battery:
1. Position A C and clamp cords t o reduce risk of damage by hood, door , or moving engine par t.
2. Stay clear of fan blades , belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause injur y to persons.
3. Check polarity of battery posts. POSITIVE (POS, P , +) battery post usually has larger diameter than NEGA TIVE (NEG, N, –) post.
4. Determine which post of battery is grounded (connected) to the chassis . If negative post is grounded t o chassis (as in most
vehicles), see 5. If positiv e post is grounded to the chassis, see 6.
5. For nega tive- grounded v ehicle, connect POSITIVE (RED) clamp from battery charger to POSITIVE (POS, P , +) ungrounded post
of battery . Connect NEGA TIVE (BLACK) clamp t o vehicle chassis or engine block awa y from battery . D o not connect clip to
carburetor , fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to heavy gauge metal par t of the frame or engine block.
6. For positiv e -grounded vehicle , connec t NEGA TIVE (BLACK) clamp from batt er y charger to NEGA TIVE (NEG, N, –) ungrounded
post of battery . Connect POSITIVE (RED) clamp to vehicle chassis or engine block a way from batt er y . Do not connec t clip to
carburetor , fuel lines or sheet-metal body par ts. C onnec t to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
