Game overview
Winter has come. The weather forecast predicts snow and ice
on the roads. Although the weather is bad, Aunt and Uncle,
Grandma and Grandad, our best friends and our own family are
leaving home. The four families want to go to school, work,
shopping and the sports centre. With so much snow and ice, they
won’t be able to reach all of their destinations. Fortunately, snow
ploughs and gritters can be brought into action. They clear the
streets so that the cars can drive safely again.
Each family wants to do three things today. Together, the players
have to make sure that they can all move around. If there is too
much snow, they call up a snow plough to sweep the streets
clean. When there is too much ice, they will use a gritter. Will
they succeed in getting each family back home? Or will some
families be snowed in and have to spend the night at the sports
centre?
Note: after a few games, it can be really nice to make the game
harder, as described under “More challenge”.
Contents
Game board, game rules, 4 rectangular things-to-do cards (with
3 holes in them), 4 cars, 5 snow ploughs, 5 gritters, 12 places-to-go
cards, 16 weather cards (with street numbers) and 24 six-sided
snow-and-ice cards (snow or ice).
Preparations
1. Look over the game board. The streets are numbered 1 to
5. The signs indicate on which street you are. The crossings
naturally have two street signs!
2. Shuffl e the 12 places-to-go cards and place them on the 12 lots
(the spaces without a number). Notice the entrance to each
lot.
3. On each home, put a car marker of the same colour. The green
house belongs to Grandma and Grandad, the purple house to
Aunt and Uncle, the blue house to our best friends and the red
one is our own family home.
4. Place a things-to-do card next to each home. This card shows
which three things this family wants to do today. Red =
school, blue = work, green = shopping, yellow = sports.
5. Put the 16 weather cards upside down next to the board and
shuffl e them well.
6. Put the 24 six-sided snow-and-ice cards on the other side of
the board and shuffl e them.
7. Make one pile of snow ploughs and one pile of gritters and
place them next to the board.
8. Choose which player will start. Maybe the one who likes snow
and ice the best?
Playing
Each turn has two parts. First, turning a weather card, so you
know whether and where there will be snow or ice. Then,
choosing to drive with one of the cars, or to bring a snow plough
or gritter into action.
The weather forecast: snow or ice
1. At the start of your turn, you turn up a weather card. It shows
a number or a sun.
2. Did you turn up a number? This street will get bad weather
now. Take one of the snow-and-ice cards. Put it on one of the
street spaces with this number. From now on, no cars can
pass this space! Ask the other players for advice on the best
placement.
3. Did you turn up a sun? The weather is dry and sunny. No
snow or ice this time! So no snow-and-ice card needs to be
taken.
4. Sometimes all the spaces on one street are covered with snow
or ice. If you turn up the number of that street, you don’t need
to take a snow-and-ice card.
5. Used weather cards are put face up next to the game board.
When all 16 weather cards are used, they are turned down and
shuffl ed.
Driving the cars
6. You may now drive one of the four cars. We all take care of
the four families, so at each turn you can choose which car
you want to drive.
7. You can drive as far as you wish, but only along street spaces
without snow and ice!
8. You will drive from home to one of the 12 lots, from one lot to
the other or back home (see below).
9. Instead of driving a car, you can deploy a snow plough or a
gritter (see below).
10. Now it is the next player’s turn.
Places to go (school, work, shops, sports)
11. The lots with places-to-go cards always have one entrance.
Look carefully.
12. When arriving at a lot, you can take the places-to-go card
and put it in that family’s things-to-do card. See to it that the
colour of the places-to-go card corresponds with the colour on
the things-to-do card. The order is not relevant.
13. Use your imagination to understand why everyone wants to
go to these places. Why do grandma and grandad visit school?
Maybe they are picking up their grandchild?
14. The car stays on this now empty lot.
15. Later on in the game, you may wish to visit an empty lot. This
is allowed. You cannot end on a street space.
