Input (Source) connectionsInputs 1 and 2 on the 840E feature either unbalanced (phono/RCA) orbalanced (XLR) connections. The 840E is designed to work at its highestperformance when a balanced interconnect is used.using a three-wire connection. One signal wire (the hot or in-phase)carries the normal signal, while other (the cold or phase-inverted)carries an inverted version. The balanced input senses the differencebetween the two lines to give the wanted signal. Any noise voltages thatappear identically on both lines (these are called common-modesignals) are cancelled by the subtraction. The diagrams below shows the 840E pre-amplifier connected to an Azur840C CD player in unbalanced (Figure 1) and balanced (Figure 2)configurations. The 840E can also be connected to non CambridgeAudio sources with balanced outputs.Make sure the Balanced/Unbalanced switch for Inputs 1 and 2 are setto the connection type you wish to use.Balanced connections in an audio system are designed to rejectelectrical noise, from power wiring etc, and also the effects of noisecurrents flowing through ground connections. The basic principle ofbalanced interconnection is to get the signal you want by subtraction,Figure 1: Unbalanced inputFigure 2: Balanced input840E840EMulti-RoomInazur 840E Pre-AmplifierOut/ThruInInOutPower Rating: 230V AC ~ 50HzMax Power Consumption: 36WInput 1 Balanced AudioGNDPowerOnOffInKeypad 1IR1IR3Keypad 2IR2IR4Input 1 Balanced AudioGNDInternational Patent PendingLeisureTech Electronics Pty LtdControl BusInOutPSUInwww.cambridge-audio.comLeftBalancedCAUTIONAVISACHTUNGRisk of electricshock.Do not open.Risque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.Balanced Pre OutPre OutInput 1UnbalancedLInput 1Flat / 200Hz L.P.RightRightLeftLeftLLRightInput 2LeftRec Out 2RightRec Out 1IR4Rec InInput 3Input 4Input 5Input 6IR2Input 7Rec InRec Out 1Rec Out 2Pre OutLInput 7Flat / 200Hz L.P.Input 6Balanced Pre OutInput 5Keypad 2LLInput 4Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.IR EmitterOut/ThruPower Rating: 230V AC ~ 50HzMax Power Consumption: 36WInput 3ACHTUNGRisque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.Inazur 840E Pre-AmplifierInInput 2AVISRisk of electricshock.Do not open.TriggerDesigned in London, EnglandPSUwww.cambridge-audio.comCAUTIONInput 2 Balanced AudioMulti-RoomIR3BalancedInput 1OffInput 2 Balanced AudioIR1International Patent PendingLeisureTech Electronics Pty LtdControl BusLOnIR EmitterRS232CTriggerDesigned in London, EnglandRS232CKeypad 1PowerLRRRPre OutPower ACUnbalancedRightLeftSub OutRec Out 2Rec Out 1Rec InInput 7Input 6Input 5Input 4Input 3Input 2Input 1(Unbalanced)(Unbalanced)RRRGNDManufacturedin an ISO9001approved facilityInput 1RRPower ACUnbalancedBalancedBalancedUnbalancedGNDInput 2Manufacturedin an ISO9001approved facilityThis device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. azur840EThe 840E features both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA/Phono)output connections. For the best quality we recommend you use thebalanced output with power amplifiers that feature this connection(such as our own 840W Class XD power amplifier). Before making any connections to the loudspeakers, make sure allpower is turned off and only use suitable interconnects (e.g. bananaplugs). Ensure that the positive (+) and negative (-) connections arematched. The diagram below shows the 840E pre-amplifier connected to an Azur840W power amplifier and a pair of loudspeakers.Your loudspeaker may have more than one pair of connecting terminals;LF (Low Frequency) and HF (High Frequency). For single-wiring it isrecommended to connect to the LF terminals. The metal stripconnecting the low-frequency terminals to the high-frequency terminalsmust not be removed (only to be removed for a bi-wiring system). When using unbalanced (phono/RCA) connections, the Left and RightInput Type switches on the 840W must be in the Unbalanced position.Note: In this configuration the 840W must be set to Stereo mode.840EInput 2 Balanced AudioMulti-RoomTriggerDesigned in London, EnglandInazur 840E Pre-AmplifierOffIR EmitterOut/ThruInKeypad 1IR1IR3Keypad 2IR2IR4Input 1 Balanced AudioGNDInternational Patent PendingLeisureTech Electronics Pty LtdControl BusInOutPower Rating: 230V AC ~ 50HzMax Power Consumption: 36WRS232CPowerOnPSUInwww.cambridge-audio.comRightInput 5Input 6Input 7Rec InRec Out 1Rec Out 2LeftRightLeftBalancedLRRPre OutLRFlat / 200Hz L.P.Input 4Balanced Pre OutLInput 3Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.Input 2ACHTUNGRisque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.Input 1AVISRisk of electricshock.Do not open.LCAUTIONUnbalancedInput 1RBalancedPower ACUnbalancedGNDPre OutManufacturedin an ISO9001approved facilityRightLeftSub OutRec Out 2Rec Out 1Rec InInput 7Input 6Input 5Input 4Input 3Input 2Input 1(Unbalanced)(Unbalanced)Input 2This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Mono Bridged connectionsThe matching Azur 840W power amplifier features Mono and BridgedMono settings that allow two (or more) 840Ws to be used as mono-blocsfor high end systems. Below is an example using two 840Ws in BridgedMono with an 840E.Important! 840W settingsBefore making any connections to the loudspeakers, make sure allpower is turned off and only use suitable interconnects (e.g. bananaplugs). Ensure that the positive (+) and negative (-) connections arewired as shown in the diagram. In Bridged Mono mode each 840W drives one speaker across its outputchannels acting as a 500W mono amplifier instead of a 200wpc stereoone. One 840W drives the left speaker and the other the right. See the840W manual for full details on Bridged Mono and other possiblecombinations. When using balanced (XLR) connections, the Left and Right Input Typeswitches on the 840W must be in the Balanced position. When usingunbalanced (phono/RCA) connections, the Left and Right Input Typeswitches on the 840W must be in the Unbalanced position. The example below uses balanced connections from 840E to each840W, unbalanced connections can also be used and the principle isthe same.Only use the Left Inputs on the 840W for Bridged operation. In this configuration the Stereo/Mono switch on the 840W must be setto Mono and the Mono mode switch must be set to Bridged.StereoStereoMonoMonoMono ModeMono ModeBi-AmpBi-AmpBridgedBridgedBridgedBridgedUse Left Input forBridged / Bi-Ampoperation.Use Left Input forBridged / Bi-Ampoperation.840W840WLoudspeaker Terminals - RightIMPORTANT!Only change modeswhen unit is off.Refer to Manual formore information.Impedance 4 - 8 ohmsPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresStereoLoudspeaker Terminals - LeftDesigned in London, Englandazur 840W Class XD Power Amplifierwww.cambridge-audio.comTMLoudspeaker Terminals - RightImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresClass 2 WiringClass 2 WiringLoudspeaker Terminals - LeftIMPORTANT!Only change modeswhen unit is off.Refer to Manual formore information.InImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsDesigned in London, EnglandPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresazur 840W Class XD Power Amplifierwww.cambridge-audio.comTMStereoInControl BusMonoBridgedonly!Control BusBridgedonly!OutOnMonoBridgedonly!OnInMono ModeTriggerPower ACBi-AmpOffClass 2 WiringInMono ModeTriggerPower ACBi-AmpOut/ThruOut/ThruBridgedBridgedBalanced Audio - RightInputLoop OutputUnbalancedAudio - RightBridgedBridgedUse Left Input forBridged / Bi-Ampoperation.IR EmitterInLoopUnbalancedAudio - LeftBalanced Audio - LeftInputBalanced Audio - RightInputLoop OutputLoop OutputRightInput TypeLeftInput TypeBalancedBalancedUse Left Input forBridged / Bi-Ampoperation.UnbalancedAudio - RightInputInputInIR EmitterInLoopInLoopRightInput TypeLeftInput TypeBalancedBalanced1 = Ground2=3=N1863UnbalancedUnbalancedCAUTIONAVISACHTUNGRisk of electricshock.Do not open.Risque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.1 = Ground2=3=Max Power Consumption: 1600WLoop OutputLoop OutputLoop OutputInLoopUnbalancedManufactured in an ISO9001 approved facilityInput 2 Balanced AudioMulti-RoomTriggerDesigned in London, EnglandInazur 840E Pre-AmplifierOffIR EmitterOut/ThruInOutKeypad 1IR1IR3Keypad 2IR2IR4Input 1 Balanced AudioGNDInternational Patent PendingLeisureTech Electronics Pty LtdControl BusInPower Rating: 230V AC ~ 50HzMax Power Consumption: 36WRS232CPowerPSUInwww.cambridge-audio.comInput 6Input 7Rec InRec Out 1Rec Out 2Flat / 200Hz L.P.RightInput 5Balanced Pre OutRightLeftInput 4Pre OutLInput 3Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.Input 2ACHTUNGRisque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.LeftBalancedInput 1AVISRisk of electricshock.Do not open.LLCAUTIONUnbalancedInput 1LBalancedRRRRPower ACUnbalancedGNDManufacturedin an ISO9001approved facilityPre OutRightLeftSub OutRec Out 2Rec Out 1Rec InInput 7Input 6Input 5Input 4This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Pre-amplifier setup continuedFixed level inputsFront IRAny input of the 840E is able to be set for fixed gain. Whenever this inputis selected the gain will automatically go to this value and will not beadjustable by the volume control. This can be useful with sources thathave their own built in volume control (such as some set-top boxes etc.)ModeAlso, this feature can be used to integrate an AV Receiver which has preamp outputs (such as our own 540R or 640R models) with the 840E.VolumeUsed in conjunction with Custom Installation (C.I.) systems or IRrepeater systems, it may be desirable to disable the front panel IR bysetting FRONT IR to off (press the input select button to turn off). Pressthe Mode button to exit. The front Left and Right pre-amp outputs of the AV Receiver are simply fedto any desired input of the 840E and that input set for fixed gain. The AVreceiver is then wired to the various surround speakers whilst the 840E/Wdrives the Front Left and Right.Input gain trimThe 840E/W can then be used for Stereo sources as normal for bestsound quality. When it is desired to decode surround sound, select theinput chosen for fixed gain on the 840E. Now the AV Receiver can be usedto decode any of its surround sound sources. It will have control of thevolume of all channels and the 840Es own volume control will bedisabled. The relative levels of the inputs can be adjusted by gain trim. This allowseach to be adjusted so that each sounds the same in terms of averageloudness when you switch between them. Pick the loudest soundingsource and trim its level until it matches the average perceived level ofthe others. Repeat this process if other sources also stand out as louderthan the average. You may wish to re-name the fixed level input as AV mode or similar onthe 840E. As the gain can be fixed to any value it is easy to match thelevel of the 840E to that of the other AV channels.ModeTo set a fixed volume for a source, select FIXED INP in the SystemConfigure menu:VolumeTo set the input gain trim for each source, select INP TRIM in the SystemConfigure menu. Select the input required and use the volume control toset the gain between 0 and -12 dB (the available range is restricted ifthe volume is set very low). Press the Mode button to exit.ModeVolumeSelect the input required and set the fixed gain using the volume control(the OFF setting does not disable the input but leaves the input gainsubject to the volume control which is the default setting). When asource has a fixed input, the balance is always set to neutral. Press theMode button to exit.CExampleLoudspeaker Terminals - RightImpedance 4 - 8 ohmsDesigned in London, EnglandPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresazur 840W Class XD Power Amplifierwww.cambridge-audio.comTMStereoLInRControl BusMonoBridgedonly!840E/W used with an AV receiverconnected to Input 7 (which is thenset to Fixed Gain mode).Loudspeaker Terminals - LeftIMPORTANT!Only change modeswhen unit is off.Refer to Manual formore information.Impedance 4 - 8 ohmsPlease ensure that loudspeaker terminals are fully tightenedVeuillez s'assurer que les bornes de l'enceinte sont entirement serresBridgedonly!OutOnOffClass 2 WiringClass 2 WiringInMono ModeTriggerPower ACBi-Amp5.1 speaker connections shown.Out/ThruBridgedBridgedBalanced Audio - RightInputUse Left Input forBridged / Bi-Ampoperation.UnbalancedAudio - RightLoop OutputUnbalancedAudio - LeftIR EmitterInInputInBalanced Audio - LeftInputLoop OutputInputLoopRightInput TypeLeftInput TypeBalancedBalancedInLoopPower Rating: 230V AC ~ 50Hz1 = Ground2=3=Max Power Consumption: 1600W1 = Ground2=3=N1863UnbalancedLoop Output840WUnbalancedCAUTIONAVISACHTUNGRisk of electricshock.Do not open.Risque de chocelectrique.Ne pas ouvrir.Vorm ffnendes gertes.Netzstecker ziehen.Loop OutputManufactured in an ISO9001 approved facilityThis device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules.
